What is an AI Overview?
An AI Overview is a summary written by Google's AI that appears above the regular results for some searches. It answers the query directly in a few short paragraphs or a list, and it links to the web pages the answer drew on, shown as link cards beside or within the text.
Search for something like:
how long does a tankless water heater lastand Google may show an AI Overview giving a typical lifespan, the factors that shorten it and maintenance tips, with links to the plumbing and manufacturer pages it used. The ordinary blue links still follow underneath.
AI Overviews are written by a custom version of Google's Gemini model. Google moved AI Overviews in the U.S. onto a custom version of Gemini 2.5 in May 2025 [6]. Not every search gets one: Google decides per query whether an AI Overview is helpful.
How does Google choose the sources in an AI Overview?
Google chooses AI Overview sources from pages already in its search index, using the same eligibility rules as normal results. A page must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet, and Google says there are "no additional technical requirements" and no special optimizations needed [7].
Two parts of Google's description matter for site owners:
- More searches than the one typed. AI Overviews "may use a 'query fan-out' technique," running related searches across subtopics and citing pages found through any of them [7]. A cited page does not have to rank for the original query. See query fan-out.
- Supporting links found during writing. While a response is being generated, Google's models identify more supporting pages, so AI Overviews can show "a wider and more diverse set of helpful links" than a classic results page [7].
Google has not published how it weighs pages for citation. Search Insider's own tests show AI Overview citations tracking the organic results closely. Across 610 searches in its stop words study, citations moved with the organic rankings rather than independently. In its year-in-title study, pages with a year in the title were cited more often at first glance (24.5% against 14.8%), but the gap disappeared once pages of the same age, on the same search and at a similar rank were compared. Ranking well and being fresh explained the citation, not the wording of the title.
When did Google launch AI Overviews?
Google launched AI Overviews to everyone in the U.S. on May 14, 2024, after a year of testing under the name Search Generative Experience [1][2]. Since then the feature has expanded to most of the world and moved to newer Gemini models.
May 2023: Search Generative Experience
Google announced SGE on May 10, 2023, as an opt-in experiment in a new program called Search Labs, available first on Chrome desktop and the Google app in the U.S. [1].
May 2024: AI Overviews launch
At Google I/O on May 14, 2024, Google renamed the feature AI Overviews and began rolling it out to everyone in the U.S., saying people had already used it "billions of times" in Search Labs [2].
May 2024: the glue-on-pizza week
In the first weeks after launch, some AI Overviews suggested using glue to make cheese stick to pizza, drawn from a joke in a discussion forum, and answered "How many rocks should I eat?" from a satirical article. On May 30, 2024, Google said it had made more than a dozen fixes, including better detection of nonsensical queries, limits on satire and user-generated content, and tighter triggering for health topics [3].
October 2024: more than 100 countries
Google expanded AI Overviews to more than 100 countries and territories, saying the feature would reach more than 1 billion users every month [4].
May 2025: 1.5 billion users and Gemini 2.5
At Google I/O 2025, Google said AI Overviews had reached over 1.5 billion users in 200 countries and territories, and that the queries showing them had grown more than 10% in markets such as the U.S. and India [5]. The same day it announced Gemini 2.5 in AI Overviews in the U.S. and launched AI Mode [6].
What is the difference between an AI Overview and a featured snippet?
A featured snippet quotes one web page word for word, while an AI Overview writes a new answer drawn from several pages. Google defines featured snippets as results where "the format of a regular search result is reversed, showing the descriptive snippet first" [8]. The text is the page's own.
| Featured snippet | AI Overview | |
|---|---|---|
| Text | Extracted from one page | Generated by a Gemini model |
| Sources | One | Usually several |
| Can be wrong in its own words | No, only by quoting a wrong page | Yes |
Opt out with nosnippet | Yes | Yes |
Opt out with lower max-snippet | Yes, often | Limits what can be shown [7] |
Both are controlled by the same snippet rules, which is why blocking snippets also keeps a page out of AI Overviews [7][8].
What is the difference between AI Overviews and AI Mode?
AI Overviews appear inside normal search results, while AI Mode is a separate, conversational search tab built entirely around AI answers. AI Mode launched for everyone in the U.S. on May 20, 2025 [6]. It uses query fan-out by design and supports follow-up questions, while an AI Overview is a single summary at the top of a classic results page [6][7]. Both follow the same eligibility rules and both are counted in Search Console's Web search type [7].
How do you track AI Overviews in Search Console?
You cannot isolate AI Overviews in Search Console. Google reports traffic from AI features inside the Performance report's Web search type, with clicks, impressions and position mixed in with ordinary results [7].
Position is especially misleading. Google's John Mueller has confirmed that Search Console treats an AI Overview as one block, so every link inside it is recorded at the block's position, usually 1, whether it is a prominent card or hidden behind "Show more" [10]. A link hidden behind an expand button only records an impression once someone opens it [10].
There is no tool, from Google or a third party, that measures exactly how many clicks AI Overviews take from a site [11]. The practical method is a comparison: track which of your queries show an AI Overview (rank trackers report this), then compare click-through rate on those queries before and after the AI Overview appeared, or against similar queries without one [11]. Stable impressions and rankings with falling clicks point to the AI Overview.
How do you stop your content appearing in AI Overviews?
To keep a page out of AI Overviews, use Google's snippet controls: nosnippet on the page, data-nosnippet on specific sections, a low max-snippet value, or noindex to remove the page from Search entirely [7].
<meta name="robots" content="nosnippet">Each control also affects the page's normal search listing, so there is no way to opt out of AI Overviews alone while keeping a full snippet in classic results. Blocking Google-Extended in robots.txt does not remove a page from AI Overviews: Google says Google-Extended "does not impact a site's inclusion in Google Search," and it controls Gemini model training instead [9].
How do you get cited in AI Overviews?
To get cited in AI Overviews, rank well for the query and the questions around it, and write sections that answer one question each in their first sentence. Google says no special markup, files or optimization are needed [7], and Search Insider's year-in-title study found citations following organic rank and page freshness rather than cosmetic title edits.
In practice:
- Rank first. Citations track the organic results, so the usual ranking work comes first.
- Cover the follow-up questions. Fan-out searches look for subtopics, so a page that answers cost, comparisons and alternatives has more ways in.
- Keep pages current. Newer pages were cited more often, and page age explained most of the apparent advantage of year-stamped titles.
- Be quotable. Short, specific, self-contained answers are easier to cite than long introductions.
Google has not published citation weights, and no outside study can see them directly. Treat any precise "ranking factors for AI Overviews" list as a hypothesis.
