How does Google choose sources for AI Overviews?

The short answer: AI Overviews draw on pages already in Google's index. Google may run many related searches at once, then links the pages that support the answer. No special markup is needed: a page must be indexed and allowed to show a snippet.

Based on Google Search Central, Search Console Help and Google's blog.

What it shows

  • AI Overviews and AI Mode may use query fan-out: many related searches across subtopics at once.
  • To be a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet.
  • No llms.txt, AI text files or special schema are needed.
  • nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex limit what Google shows.
  • A Search Console switch (2026) lets sites opt out of AI features.
  • Google-Extended does not affect inclusion or ranking in Google Search.
  • AI Overviews had over 2.5 billion monthly users in May 2026.
  • AI feature traffic is counted in Search Console's Performance report under Web.

What to do

  • First: Check key pages are indexed and not blocked from snippets.
  • Writing: Cover the follow-up questions a searcher would ask next.
  • Measuring: Track AI Overview and AI Mode impressions in Search Console.
  • Skip: llms.txt and special AI schema. Google says neither is needed.

The walkthrough

How does Google pick sources for AI Overviews?

AI Overviews link to pages from Google's index that support the answer. Both AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a query fan-out technique, issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources [1]. Google describes AI Mode breaking a question into subtopics and running many searches at once [2]. Google says these features show a wider and more diverse set of links than a classic search [1].

What makes a page eligible for AI Overviews?

A page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet to appear as a supporting link [1]. There are no additional technical requirements [1].

Do you need llms.txt or special schema for AI Overviews?

No. Google says you don't need to create new machine-readable files, AI text files or markup to appear in AI features, and there's no special schema.org structured data to add [1].

How can you keep your content out of AI Overviews?

Google's standard controls apply: nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex limit what is shown from your pages [1]. In 2026 Google added a Search Console setting that lets sites opt out of appearing in its generative AI Search features; opted-out sites receive no traffic from those features, and the control is not used as a ranking signal elsewhere [4]. Google-Extended does not affect inclusion or ranking in Google Search [3].

How do you measure AI Overview traffic?

Clicks and impressions from AI features are included in the Search Console Performance report under the Web search type [1]. Google also introduced a generative AI performance report covering AI Overviews and AI Mode [5].

How many people use AI Overviews?

Google said in May 2026 that AI Overviews had over 2.5 billion monthly active users and AI Mode had passed 1 billion [6].

Does a year in the title help you get cited?

Not by itself. In Search Insider's study of 5,834 AI Overview citations, pages with a year in the title were quoted more often, but the gap disappeared when pages of the same age were compared. Pages showing an expired year were quoted least [7].
