How do you show up in Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode?

The short answer: There's no special trick. Any page that's indexed and eligible for a snippet can be used, with no extra files, tags or schema. Write for people, keep content crawlable, and use Google's controls only if you want out.

Based on Google Search Central and Search Console Help.

What it shows

  • To be eligible, a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. There are no additional technical requirements.
  • No AI text files, new machine-readable files or special schema are needed.
  • Google-Extended does not affect inclusion or ranking in Google Search.
  • Traffic from AI features is counted in Search Console's Web search type.
  • nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex limit what's shown.
  • The Search generative AI setting in Search Console lets any site exclude itself from AI Overviews, AI Mode and AI features in Discover.

What to do

  • Eligibility: Check key pages are indexed and allowed a snippet.
  • Content: Write for people, with key answers in plain text.
  • Opting out: Use snippet controls or the Search Console setting.

The walkthrough

How do you get into AI Overviews and AI Mode?

A page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet, meeting Search's technical requirements [1]. Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no other special optimizations are necessary [1].

Do you need llms.txt or special schema for AI Overviews?

No. Google says you don't need to create new machine-readable files, AI text files or markup to appear in these features, and there's no special schema.org structured data to add [1].

What is query fan-out?

AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a query fan-out technique, issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources to develop a response [1]. This lets them show a wider and more diverse set of links than a classic search result [1].

What helps content perform in AI features?

Google's general advice applies: allow crawling, link to important pages internally, provide a good page experience, keep important content in text form, support it with high-quality images and video, and make sure structured data matches the visible content [1].

Does blocking Google-Extended remove you from AI Overviews?

No. Google-Extended controls whether content can be used to train future Gemini models, and Google says it does not impact a site's inclusion in Google Search or act as a ranking signal [2].

How do you stop your content appearing in AI Overviews?

Page-level controls are nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex [1]. Search Console also has a Search generative AI setting that excludes a site from AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative AI features in Discover; Google says it isn't used as a ranking or inclusion signal for other parts of Search, and it rolled out to all websites as of August 31, 2026 [3]. Exclusion generally takes a few days [3].

Where does AI Overview traffic show in Search Console?

Sites appearing in AI features are included in the overall search traffic in Search Console, within the Web search type [1].
