What is Google AI Mode, and how do you show up in it?

The short answer: AI Mode is Google's conversational search for questions that need reasoning, comparisons or follow-ups. It uses query fan-out to run many related searches at once. There are no extra requirements: an indexed page that can show a snippet is eligible.

Based on Google Search Central and the Google blog.

What it shows

  • AI Mode handles questions that need further exploration, reasoning or complex comparisons.
  • AI Overviews and AI Mode may use query fan-out, issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources.
  • Google says there are no additional requirements or special optimizations to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
  • A page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet.
  • AI Mode traffic is counted in the Search Console Performance report under the Web search type.
  • Google began rolling AI Mode out to everyone in the U.S. in May 2025.

What to do

  • Measurement: Track it in the Performance report, Web search type.

The walkthrough

What is Google AI Mode?

AI Mode is a Google Search experience for queries where further exploration, reasoning or complex comparisons are needed, letting people ask nuanced questions and follow up [1]. Google began rolling it out to everyone in the U.S. at Google I/O in May 2025 [2].

How is AI Mode different from AI Overviews?

AI Overviews summarize a topic within regular results when Google's systems decide it's additive to classic Search, while AI Mode is built for longer, more complex questions with follow-ups [1]. Both use the same eligibility rules [1].

What is query fan-out?

Both AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a query fan-out technique, issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources to build a response [1]. Google says this can surface a wider and more diverse set of helpful links than classic search [1].

How do you get into AI Mode?

Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary [1]. A page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet [1].

What does Google recommend for AI search?

Google's tips include unique, valuable content for people, a good page experience, making content accessible to crawling, structured data that matches visible content, and supporting text with good images and video [3].

Where does AI Mode traffic show in Search Console?

Traffic from AI features is included in the Search Console Performance report, under the Web search type [1].

Can you keep content out of AI Mode?

Yes, with existing preview controls: nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet or noindex [1].
