Is SEO dead?

The short answer: No. Search is changing, not ending. AI answers take some clicks, but Google says organic clicks to websites have held steady, and its AI features cite pages found through ordinary SEO.

Based on Pew Research Center, Google, and Search Insider research.

What it shows

  • When a Google search showed an AI summary, people clicked a regular result on 8% of visits, against 15% without one (Pew, March 2025).
  • Only 1% of visits included a click on a link inside the AI summary.
  • About 1 in 5 Google searches (18%) showed an AI summary.
  • Google says total organic click volume has been relatively stable year over year (August 2025).
  • Google says SEO best practices remain relevant for AI features.
  • Search Insider research: the current year in a title went with about half a position higher, an expired year with about two positions lower.

What to do

  • Want to be cited in AI Overviews: Keep the basics: pages must be indexed and eligible for a snippet.
  • Reporting on SEO: Track clicks, not just rankings.
  • Reviewing old pages: Keep them current. An out-of-date year still costs rankings.

The walkthrough

Is SEO dead in 2026?

No. Search is changing, but people still click through to websites from Google. Google says total organic click volume from Search to websites has been relatively stable year over year [2]. What has changed is that AI summaries answer some questions on the results page, so some searches send fewer clicks than before [1].

Do AI Overviews reduce clicks to websites?

On the searches where they appear, yes. Pew Research Center tracked 900 US adults in March 2025 and found people clicked a regular search result on 8% of visits to pages with an AI summary, against 15% on pages without one [1]. Clicks on links inside the summary happened on just 1% of those visits [1].

How often do AI summaries appear in Google?

In Pew's study of 68,879 Google searches, 18% produced an AI summary, about one in five [1]. The other four in five showed classic results without an AI summary.

Does SEO still matter for AI Overviews?

Yes. Google says the best practices for SEO remain relevant for AI features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode, and that there are no additional requirements to appear in them [3]. To be shown as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet [3].

What still moves Google rankings?

Page details still matter. In Search Insider's study of 1,000 Google searches and 18,321 ranking pages, pages with the current year in the title ranked about half a position higher on average, and pages showing an expired year ranked about two positions lower [4].

How should SEO change for AI search?

Keep the technical basics so pages can be indexed and shown with a snippet [3]. Track clicks as well as rankings, because a page can hold its position while clicks fall on searches with an AI summary [1]. Keep pages current, since small signals like an out-of-date year still go with lower rankings [4].
