Does a year in your title get you cited by AI Overviews?

The short answer: Not by itself. Pages with a year are quoted more, but they also tend to be newer. Compare pages of the same age and the gap disappears.

What was tested: 1,000 Google searches with an AI Overview, 17,240 ranking pages, 5,834 citations.

The evidence

With a year in the title: 25 in 100
With no year: 15 in 100
Same search: 1.91x
+ similar ranking spot: 1.74x
+ similar freshness: 1.46x
+ the same age: 1.05x

What to do

The page needs updating: Update the page, not just the year.
Your title shows an expired year: Fix it. Those pages were quoted about half as often.
The page is evergreen: Do not add a year just for AI Overviews.
