Do author bylines and author pages matter for SEO?

The short answer: Google asks whether it's obvious who wrote your content, and whether bylines lead to more about the author. Show a real byline, link it to an author page, and match it in Article markup. Fake authors are a sign of low quality.

Based on Google Search Central.

What it shows

  • Google's helpful content guidance asks whether it's self-evident to visitors who authored the content.
  • It also asks whether bylines lead to further information about the authors, giving background about them.
  • Google calls fabricated author profiles, including AI-generated images or false credentials, deceptive.
  • Article markup should include every author shown on the page.
  • Put only the author's name in author.name, and use url or sameAs to identify them.
  • Use Person for people and Organization for organizations.

What to do

  • Bylines: Add one wherever readers expect it.
  • Author pages: Link each byline to real background.
  • Markup: Mirror the visible byline.

The walkthrough

Does Google care who wrote your content?

Google's guidance on helpful content asks whether it's self-evident to your visitors who authored your content, and whether bylines lead to further information about the author, giving background about them [1].

What should an author page include?

Background that shows who the author is and why they can speak on the topic, as Google's guidance suggests bylines should lead to [1]. Listing their articles and linking to their other profiles are common additions; the profile links can also go in sameAs markup [2].

Can you use made-up authors?

No. Google says fabricating creator profiles, such as with AI-generated images, false names or fake credentials, is deceptive [1].

How should you mark up authors?

Include every author shown on the page, put only the name in author.name with no job titles or honorifics, add url or sameAs pointing to valid URLs, and use Person or Organization as the type [2].
