What is IndexNow, and should you use it?

The short answer: IndexNow is a free ping that tells search engines a URL was added, updated or deleted. Bing, Yandex, Naver, Seznam and Yep use it, and one ping is shared with all of them. Google isn't a participant.

Based on indexnow.org and Bing Webmaster Blog.

What it shows

  • IndexNow lets sites tell search engines a URL was added, updated or deleted.
  • Participants include Microsoft Bing, Yandex, Naver, Seznam.cz and Yep. Google isn't listed.
  • URLs submitted to one engine are shared with all participating engines.
  • Keys are 8 to 128 hexadecimal characters, hosted as a text file at the site root.
  • Up to 10,000 URLs can be submitted per POST request.
  • Submitting a URL doesn't guarantee immediate indexing.

What to do

  • Setup: Turn on IndexNow in your CMS or ping on publish.
  • Bing: Import sites from Search Console.
  • Sitemaps: Keep lastmod accurate.

The walkthrough

What is IndexNow?

IndexNow is a simple ping that lets website owners tell search engines a URL and its content has been added, updated or deleted [1].

Which search engines use IndexNow?

Participating search engines include Microsoft Bing, Yandex, Naver, Seznam.cz and Yep [1]. Google isn't listed as a participant [1]. Submitted URLs are automatically shared with all participating engines, so you only need to notify one [2].

How do you set up IndexNow?

Generate a key of 8 to 128 hexadecimal characters and host it in a text file at your site root, reachable without login or restrictions [2]. Then submit a single URL with a GET request, or up to 10,000 URLs per POST request [2].

Does IndexNow guarantee indexing?

No. Submitting a URL doesn't guarantee immediate indexing, but it increases the likelihood that important changes are discovered and crawled faster [2].

What does Bing Webmaster Tools offer?

You can import verified sites and sitemaps from Google Search Console, and imported sites are verified automatically [3]. In February 2026, Bing introduced an AI Performance report in public preview showing how content appears across Microsoft Copilot and AI-generated summaries in Bing [4].

Do sitemaps still matter for Bing?

Yes. Bing says the lastmod field remains a key signal that helps it prioritize URLs for recrawling, and it pairs sitemaps with IndexNow for freshness in AI search [5].
