What makes a product review rank in Google?

The short answer: Google's reviews system rewards reviews written by people who know the topic and show it: first-hand evidence, measurements, real comparisons, honest drawbacks. Quality and originality matter, not length.

Based on Google Search Central.

What it shows

  • Google's reviews system rewards high quality reviews written by experts or enthusiasts who know the topic well.
  • Best practices include first-hand evidence, quantitative measurements, comparisons, benefits and drawbacks, and reasons behind "best" picks.
  • Google says to focus on quality and originality, not length.
  • The system evaluates first-party reviews, not user reviews posted on product pages.
  • It works mainly at page level, but sites with lots of review content can be evaluated as a whole.

What to do

  • Testing: Use the product and show your own photos and measurements.
  • Writing: Name drawbacks and better picks for different needs.
  • Ranking lists: Explain why each "best" earned it.

The walkthrough

What is Google's reviews system?

The reviews system aims to reward high quality reviews: content with insightful analysis and original research, written by experts or enthusiasts who know the topic well [1]. It's improved at a regular and ongoing pace [2].

What does Google want in a product review?

Google's best practices: evaluate from a user's perspective, show you're knowledgeable, provide evidence of your own experience such as visuals or audio, share quantitative measurements, explain what sets a product apart, cover comparable options, discuss benefits and drawbacks from your own research, describe how a product has evolved, and focus on the key decision factors [3].

How should you write a best-of list?

When recommending something as the best overall or for a purpose, explain why, with first-hand supporting evidence [3]. Make sure ranked lists have enough useful content to stand on their own [3].

Does review length matter?

No. Google says to focus on the quality and originality of your reviews, not the length [3].

What content does the reviews system evaluate?

It evaluates first-party standalone content written to recommend, give an opinion or analyze, including single reviews, comparisons and ranked lists on topics such as products, media and services [2]. It does not evaluate third-party user reviews posted on product or service pages [2].

Does the reviews system affect a whole site?

It primarily evaluates review content page by page, but for sites with a substantial amount of review content, any content on the site might be evaluated [2].

What about affiliate review sites?

Google's spam policies say good affiliate sites add value with meaningful content or features, while thin affiliation means copying merchant descriptions without original content [4]. Linking to multiple sellers is one of Google's review best practices [3].
