SEO vs PPC: which should you use?

The short answer: PPC buys visits now, one click at a time. SEO earns visits that keep coming with no fee per click. The right pick depends on how fast you need results and how long you plan to compete.

Based on Google Ads Help, Microsoft Advertising and Google Search Central.

What it shows

  • PPC: you pay for each click on your ad, on Google, Microsoft Bing and Google Shopping.
  • Most Google ads are reviewed within one business day.
  • A Google Ads campaign can spend up to 2x its average daily budget on one day, but no more than 30.4x in a month.
  • Stop paying for PPC and the ads and traffic stop.
  • SEO: Google charges nothing to rank. You pay for content and site work.
  • Some SEO changes show in hours, others take several months.
  • Paid search has no impact on organic ranking.

What to do

  • Need sales in the next 30 days?: Start with PPC.
  • Competing for these searches for a year or more?: Invest in SEO.
  • Only running a short campaign?: Use PPC for the campaign, then stop.
  • Budget for both?: Run PPC while SEO builds, then shift spend as rankings grow.

The walkthrough

What is the difference between SEO and PPC?

SEO (search engine optimization) earns unpaid rankings in Google's organic results. PPC (pay per click) is advertising where you pay each time someone clicks your ad [1]. PPC brings visits as soon as ads run. SEO takes longer, but there is no fee per click, and pages that rank can keep bringing visits after the work is done.

How does PPC pricing work?

With cost-per-click bidding, you pay for each click on your ads [1], and with manual CPC you pay only when someone is interested enough to click [2]. Microsoft Advertising works the same way: you only pay when someone clicks your ad [3]. Google Shopping ads are also charged per click [4].

How much can a PPC campaign spend in a day?

On Google Ads, a campaign might spend up to twice its average daily budget on a busy day [6]. Over a month, it will spend no more than 30.4 times the average daily budget [6]. Set the daily budget with the monthly total in mind.

How fast do SEO and PPC work?

PPC is faster. Most Google ads are reviewed within one business day [5], and they can show once approved. SEO is slower: Google says some changes take effect in a few hours while others take several months, and suggests waiting a few weeks before judging whether a change worked [9].

Does PPC help SEO rankings?

No. Google states that investment in paid search has no impact on organic search ranking [8], and that it never accepts money to rank sites in its organic results [10]. The two can still help each other in practice: ad data shows which search terms convert, which helps you choose SEO targets.

Should a new business start with SEO or PPC?

If you need sales in the next 30 days, start with PPC. If you plan to compete for the same searches for a year or more, invest in SEO. For a short campaign, run PPC for its length and stop. With budget for both, run PPC while SEO builds, then shift spend toward SEO as rankings grow.

How can Keyword Planner help with both?

Google's Keyword Planner shows estimates of how many searches a keyword gets each month [7] and the average cost for an ad to show on searches for that keyword [7]. Keywords with a high ad cost are the ones where ranking organically saves the most money.
