Does putting the year in your title help you rank?

The short answer: A little. The current year went with about half a position higher. An expired year went with about two positions lower.

What was tested: 1,000 Google searches, 18,321 pages in the top 20 results.

The evidence

  • Current year in the title: +0.62
  • Expired year in the title: -2.0
  • Current year: 93 days
  • No year: 449 days

What to do

  • You will update it every January: Add the year and keep it current.
  • You might forget to update it: Leave it off. The downside is four times the upside.
  • The page is evergreen: Leave it off. Under 1% of informational results use one.

Method, sample and limitations are in the full study.
